Before I apply

  • Why should I join an opportunity abroad?

    Being part of an opportunity in another country can be once-in-a-lifetime experience. You get exposed to a different culture, with the chance to meet new people and make lifelong friends. It can provide you with new skills and help you to learn more about yourself, both as a person and as a professional. Most importantly, you will be able to do something meaningful, by contributing to efforts that help improve local communities and preserve local environments all over the world. You are making the world a better place.
  • Do I need specific skills in order to be part of an opportunity?

    It depends on your area of interest and the particular opportunity. At Volmundo, we ask that opportunity managers list specific skills that are required for each position, if indeed specialist skills are required. Please take the time to read the description carefully before you apply and ensure that your skills match up well with the particular role.
  • Why am I asked to give contributions to an opportunity?

    Most of your contribution is used to cover local costs, for example accommodation and/or food. Most opportunities rely entirely on your contribution in order to be able to support the opportunity’s continued existence and to carry on providing jobs for community members.
  • I am not 18 years old yet. Can I still apply for opportunities abroad?

    If you are not 18 years old, we would still love for you to register and get involved with the Volmundo community. However, unfortunately, due to legal and ethical reasons, you must be 18 or over to participate in any opportunity listed on Volmundo.
  • I want Volmundo to arrange the entire experience for me. Is this possible?

    At Volmundo, we believe strongly that when individuals spend money to fund their adventure, the money as much as possible should go to where it is needed most, directly to the opportunities. We believe anything else violates both the spirit and intention of helping the world. As a result, we avoid unnecessary administrative costs and do not offer a complete “door to door” package. We are however, more than happy to connect you directly with opportunities. Also, through the shared experiences of members of the Volmundo community, we aim to provide you with as much information and support as possible to ensure you are well prepared for the practical, cultural and emotional aspects of your trip. We believe all these elements are equally important to the experience, and we encourage you to become an independent and responsible traveller. Therefore, your money can fund more of the causes close to your heart, instead of paying for administration costs and private profits.
  • Can I go to any country that I want?

    Always check with your local authorities to find out if there are any travelling warnings or restrictions in place for the destination that you are planning to visit. As a global platform, we cannot guarantee visa conditions for travellers from every country of origin to every destination. You must check about the individual requirements for the country you hold a passport for, in relation to the country you intend on travelling to. We try to ensure the veracity of all the opportunities listed on the site, but some opportunities can be inherently found in volatile or vulnerable locations, with rapidly changing local conditions. We urge you to conduct in-depth research on your intended destination and to take sensible precautions. We also believe individuals have a duty to be aware of cultural sensitivities and differences before they travel.
  • I can’t find information that I’m looking for. What should I do?

The Application Process

  • How far in advance should I apply for an opportunity?

    Please be aware that visa applications or vaccinations are common requirements, depending on your destination. These processes can sometimes take a long time. At Volmundo, we believe you should have enough time to prepare for your trip. We do not accept application which is less than 14 days from your expected arrival date. You can apply a month before your expected arrival date. But the earlier the better!
  • How do I apply for an opportunity on Volmundo?

    First, you must create a personal profile on Volmundo. This then allows you full access to search and apply for opportunities that interest you. You can then send your application directly via our application process, via the specific page for an individual opportunity.
  • Do I have to pay any fees for my application with Volmundo?

    There are two main fees you will have to consider when applying on Volmundo: The contribution to be made to the opportunity (if required). The amount will depend on the opportunity that you apply to and is not set by Volmundo. A fee of $1 ( USD ) per day to help fund Volmundo’s mission. However, no matter the length of your trip, Volmundo will only charge a maximum of $99 ( USD ). You will receive a total refund for this amount if you are not accepted. Your small contribution helps us to run our website and achieve our goal of providing individuals and opportunities with a platform to discover one another easily and ethically, and allow even small projects to find skilled applicants with an efficient and cheap recruitment process. Volmundo is currently working on introducing a scheme for carbon offsetting. We hope to provide an opportunity for applicants to pay a small one-off fee in order to fund offsetting projects to balance the carbon footprint of international travel in order to make positive impact abroad.

After you application has been submitted

  • What if I am not accepted for the opportunity I applied for? Can I apply for another one?

    Unfortunately, some positions receive a high volume of applicants, or simply require very specific skills that may not quite fit with your skills or experiences. But that does not mean the right role for you is not out there. Volmundo lists a whole range of available positions in various areas and is regularly updated with new opportunities. We believe there is a perfect opportunity to be found for anyone who wants to make the world a better place. Your Volmundo profile lets you continue searching for opportunities that fit your skills and interests whenever you want.
  • Yes! I have been accepted for an opportunity. What happens next?

    Congratulations! You are going to undertake a life-changing journey, so make sure you are well prepared for your trip. For detailed information about the preparations, please make sure to communicate with the appointed contact person at the opportunity and read their FAQs about preparation for the trip.
  • I have applied and been accepted for an opportunity, but I am now unable to go. Can I cancel my booking?

    We are sorry to hear that you cannot now travel. Please first refer to our terms of use to see how the cancellation policy works. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please contact us as soon as possible to advise us of the circumstances around your cancellation and we will endeavour to work out a solution with you.

What do I need to do before I go?

  • Do I need to apply for visa for the country that I am going to?

    It depends on the country that you plan on travelling to and their regulations in regards to the country you hold a passport with. If you need a visa, you can contact one of our specialist visa partners in a number of countries worldwide. As professional agencies, they are experts in helping people complete visa applications.   • Do I need any kind of vaccinations or special medical care before my trip?

    You always need to check for up to date vaccination requirements for your destination with a medical professional or organisation. Volmundo offers general health information especially for travellers together with our partner, IAMAT, a not-for-profit international medical and health advisory service. Please spend some time to read it, whilst you can access more detailed health and medical advice and support by registering as a member of IAMAT, who also run a network of English-speaking qualified doctors worldwide for their members to use. You should also speak with your personal doctor for consultation on any individual conditions or requirements you should consider.
  • Do I get any training before I take part in the opportunity?

    Volmundo do not provide any formal training for individuals. Please read the relevant opportunity page for more details. Particular opportunities will arrange orientation programmes for applicants, including any relevant training or information needed to fulfil the role. Roles needing more specialised skills or experience will state this during the application process
  • I have personal health insurance in my home country. Do I still need travel insurance?

    We strongly recommend you to never travel without travel insurance. Domestic health insurance only covers treatment for that country. Travel insurance is specifically designed to cover both your personal belongings and emergency medical costs during your time abroad. Check you policy carefully to find out your specific level of cover. Often the countries that you visit will present totally different environments and climates, along with unfamiliar infrastructures. Travel insurance will reduce the risks you may face as well helping to meet any possible medical bills you might incur.
  • I do not have travel insurance yet. Can you suggest one for me?

    We recommend our partner WorldNomads, whose insurance is available in 150 countries. WorldNomads provides specially tailored travel insurance, covering personal belongings and health insurance along with many outdoor activities commonly undertaken by individuals in a foreign country.   • Do I need to arrange my own accommodation during my stay at the opportunity?

    You can get information relating to room and board arrangements in the opportunity description. You only need to arrange your own room and board if those things are not provided by the opportunity. Please contact the opportunity manager to clarify accommodation plans.

During your stay abroad

  • Who can I contact in case of emergency?

    The individual opportunity will provide an itinerary of your trip, which will include local ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact details. Upon acceptance, you will be provided with the contact details of the opportunity manager. In the case of an emergency you should first contact the opportunity manager. We recommend you save all the emergency numbers of local authorities and your embassy in the country you are visiting, so that you can contact them if you need assistance. Moreover, you can contact Volmundo Support. We will always try our best to help you overcome any difficulties abroad and direct you to the appropriate agencies.
